Overview
Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw 190 used a big air-cooled radial engine, a wide undercarriage and heavy armament. When it appeared over France in 1941 it outclassed the Spitfire Mk V, forcing the RAF to rush out the Spitfire Mk IX.
More than 20,000 were built as fighters and fighter-bombers; the later Fw 190D "Dora" switched to a liquid-cooled inline engine. Specifications are for the Fw 190 A-8.
